Free MOBI to AZW3 converter. No sign-up — upgrade your legacy MOBI files to the modern Kindle format with embedded fonts and CSS styling.
To convert MOBI to AZW3: upload your file using the form below, select AZW3 as the output format, and click Convert. Our Calibre-powered engine processes the conversion in seconds with no registration required. The converter preserves text content, chapter structure, images, and metadata. For batch conversions of up to 50 files, upgrade to Pro.
Every MOBI to AZW3 conversion runs on the Calibre engine — the industry-standard open-source ebook library trusted by readers and tools worldwide. Calibre preserves fonts, chapter structure, and metadata far more faithfully than converters that rebuild files from scratch.

Files near the limit or with many images may convert slowly or exceed the free plan's processing time.
If you are converting many files at once or prefer working from a terminal, Calibre's ebook-convert command does the same MOBI → AZW3 transformation that this web tool performs — just without the browser round-trip.
Install Calibre (free, cross-platform) first, then run:
ebook-convert input.mobi output.azw3
That single line handles the full pipeline: it unpacks the MOBI record structure, rebuilds HTML5/CSS3 content, embeds fonts if present in the source, and packages everything as Kindle Format 8. For batch jobs, wrap it in a loop:
for f in *.mobi; do ebook-convert "$f" "${f%.mobi}.azw3"; done
Key Calibre flags you may find useful: --enable-heuristics repairs minor formatting issues automatically, --extra-css lets you inject custom styles, and --page-breaks-before adds manual page breaks at chapter boundaries. If your MOBI has embedded fonts you want to preserve, add --preserve-cover-aspect-ratio to keep the original cover layout intact.
The web converter above is better for one-off conversions where you don't want to install software. Calibre is the right choice when you have dozens of files, need consistent batch settings, or want to automate the conversion as part of a larger ebook workflow.
MOBI started life as the Mobipocket format in the early 2000s, built on an even older standard called PalmDOC. Amazon acquired Mobipocket in 2005 and made MOBI the foundation of the original Kindle.
It's a simple format, and that simplicity is both its weakness and its entire remaining value:/n/n- Basic HTML only — a small subset, roughly what browsers supported in 1999
But hardware outlives file formats. There are still working Kindle Keyboards, Kindle DXs, and Kindle 2s in daily use — devices that have never received a firmware update capable of reading AZW3. For those, MOBI isn't legacy. It's the only option.
AZW3 — Amazon calls it Kindle Format 8, or KF8 — launched in 2011 alongside the Kindle Fire. It was Amazon's answer to a real problem: the old MOBI format was built on 1990s technology and couldn't handle modern book design.
Under the hood, AZW3 supports a meaningful subset of HTML5 and CSS3. That's what makes it capable of things MOBI simply can't do:/n/n- Embedded fonts — a publisher's chosen typeface travels with the book
1. Upload your MOBI. Drag the file in or browse for it. Free accounts handle files up to 4MB — most Kindle books are 1-5MB, so you'd need something unusually image-heavy to hit that.
2. Conversion runs. The MOBI structure is parsed, text and images are extracted, and the content is re-packaged into AZW3's modern HTML5/CSS3 container. Navigation gets rebuilt with proper chapter headings. Usually done in under 30 seconds.
3. Download and read. The .azw3 file opens natively on any Kindle from 2011 onward — Paperwhite, Oasis, Voyage, basic Kindle, Kindle Scribe, and Kindle Colorsoft.
Important: DRM will stop this cold. Books purchased from the Kindle Store carry Amazon's DRM, and encrypted files can't be read by any converter — you'll get an error. This works on DRM-free MOBI files: books you made yourself in Calibre or Kindle Create, titles from DRM-free publishers, Project Gutenberg downloads, and StoryBundle or Humble Bundle purchases.
Also note that if you're converting a MOBI specifically to upload to Amazon KDP or use Send to Kindle, consider converting MOBI to EPUB instead — EPUB is now Amazon's preferred format.
You want better formatting on your modern Kindle. If your current MOBI looks plain — no custom fonts, no styled headers, flat images — converting to AZW3 will make a visible difference. The typography, embedded fonts, and CSS styling will bring your book to life.
You're archiving your library. If you have a collection of old MOBI files and want them in a format that will remain readable on current and future Kindles, AZW3 is the way to go. MOBI is effectively dead as a distribution format.
You're preparing books for Send to Kindle. Amazon now recommends EPUB over MOBI for email delivery, but if your source is MOBI and you want AZW3 output (for example, for local sideloading), this conversion handles it cleanly.
You're migrating from an old Kindle. If you recently upgraded from a pre-2011 Kindle to a Paperwhite or Oasis, your existing MOBI library will still work — but converting to AZW3 gives you the better reading experience your new device deserves.
If you're on a pre-2011 Kindle, stay on MOBI. AZW3 won't run on your device. There's no point converting. Use our AZW3 to MOBI converter if you need to go the other direction.
Going MOBI → AZW3 is an upgrade, and some things will improve noticeably.
New capabilities:
Upgrading the other way — freeing a modern AZW3 so it reads on your old Kindle? Convert AZW3 to MOBI instead.
This is an upgrade, not a side-grade. MOBI is the outdated container; AZW3 is the modern one Amazon ships today.
| Feature | MOBI | AZW3 |
|---|---|---|
| Embedded fonts | No | Yes |
| CSS styling | Minimal | Full subset |
| File size | Larger | Smaller |
| Device support | Every Kindle | 2011 and later Kindles |
| Best for | Pre-2011 hardware | Modern reading |
This conversion is usually done to get modern styling, so the checks should look at exactly that.
A clean source file is half the battle. Before you upload, take one minute to verify three things.
Yes. Install Calibre (free), then run: ebook-convert input.mobi output.azw3. For batches, loop through your directory. This produces the same AZW3 output as the web converter, with additional flags for heuristics, custom CSS, and page breaks.
Yes, if your Kindle was made after 2011 and you want better typography, embedded fonts, and smaller files. If you're still using a pre-2011 Kindle (Kindle 1, 2, DX, or Kindle Keyboard), stay on MOBI — AZW3 won't run on those devices.
No — all text survives the conversion intact. What you gain is better formatting: embedded fonts, CSS styling, improved images, and tighter file compression. Nothing gets truncated or lost.
AZW3 uses modern compression that's roughly 20-40% more efficient than MOBI's older algorithm. Same content, smaller file — which means faster downloads and less storage on your Kindle.
Books bought from the Kindle Store carry Amazon DRM, and encrypted files cannot be read by any converter. The conversion works on DRM-free MOBI files such as your own Calibre exports, Project Gutenberg titles, or purchases from DRM-free publishers.
Yes — BookConv supports batch conversion on Pro accounts. For free accounts, convert one file at a time. If you have hundreds of books, consider using Calibre desktop software for bulk conversion — it offers the same MOBI → AZW3 output with more advanced options.
For direct sideloading to Kindle, yes — AZW3 is the native format. But for Send to Kindle (email delivery), Amazon now prefers EPUB. If you're uploading to KDP or using email delivery, [convert MOBI to EPUB](/convert/mobi-to-epub) instead.
Absolutely. All files are transferred over 256-bit TLS (SSL) encrypted connections. Your original file and converted file are automatically deleted from our servers within 1 hour. We never read, store, or share your content.
Deepen your understanding with expert conversion guides:
MOBI vs AZW3 and AZW3 vs MOBI — the answer depends on your Kindle's year. AZW3 wins for any Kindle from 2015 onward; MOBI only matters for pre-2015 hardware. Get the clear pick — plus a one-click, no-install way to convert either direction without losing your formatting. > BookConv processes your file on our servers and automatically deletes it within 1 hour. Files are encrypted in transit, and no account or software install is required.
If you are an avid reader or self-published author, the biggest hurdle is often format compatibility. The short answer is: Kindle users should use AZW3, while Kobo and other e-readers prefer EPUB. MOBI is outdated for new devices. Use tools like BookConv or Calibre to convert your files instantly. For the head-to-head of the two formats themselves, see our EPUB vs MOBI comparison.
You already own a Kindle and you have a file — an EPUB from the library, a MOBI you downloaded years ago, or an AZW3 someone sent you. The question is not "which format is best in theory" but "what do I actually do to get this on my device and reading-ready?" This guide is the hands-on walkthrough: how Kindle handles each format, the two ways to deliver a file (Send-to-Kindle vs USB), and the free, no-install steps to convert EPUB or MOBI into the AZW3 your Kindle wants. For the broader "which format fits which device ecosystem" comparison, see our Kindle & Kobo format guide.

AZW3, KFX, MOBI, EPUB - Kindle formats confuse everyone. This guide explains what each means, the safest format to convert to today, and how BookConv converts free in your browser with no software to install.
You have an AZW3 book and an old Kindle that only reads MOBI. A direct AZW3 to MOBI conversion can strip advanced formatting, but a careful one keeps your book readable. Here is how to convert and what to expect.
Kindle supports two legacy formats — AZW3 and MOBI — and they are not the same. AZW3 preserves fonts and layout; MOBI is simpler and older. Here is how to pick.
