CHM stands for Microsoft Compiled HTML Help. It is the help-file format Windows shipped with for two decades: software manuals, API references, and product documentation were routinely distributed as .chm files.
Despite the "compiled" name, a CHM is fundamentally a bundle of HTML pages, a table of contents, an index, and images, all compressed into one file. Because the content is plain HTML underneath, it converts to other formats far more cleanly than a binary document would.
